Politics and Religion

Do I know everything? No I do not. But I’ve had 4 or 5 drinks, so close enough.

Why do the noisiest Christians invariably flock to the Republican party in the United States? I have tried to answer this question in my own head for some time now, and come up wanting. I’m a Christian. I’m a follower of Jesus Christ. But the current crop of Republicans (going back to 2008-ish at least) are reprehensible, small-minded idiots. Come back next week, and I’ll tell you how I really feel.

I must have said it a hundred times by now: I’m not exactly a Democrat. I’m strongly in favor of small government – but if you’re not willing to talk about cutting the defense budget, you’re not really interested in reducing government spending. If you want to cut entitlement programs and defense, let’s talk. If you want to cut just entitlement programs, please accept my courteous invitation to fuck off. I believe firmly in personal freedom, including both the freedom to bear arms and the freedom to marry whoever you love regardless of their gender or sexual identity. Honestly, seriously, the government needs to stay the hell out of our personal lives.

And yet…the most serious threats I see to our personal liberties and basic freedoms emanate from the right wing of the U.S. political spectrum. Want to terminate an unwanted pregnancy? That’ll require a trans-vaginal ultrasound, and maybe also the signature of the biological father. Even if he was the waste of oxygen that raped you. You whore. Stop dressing so fetchingly. Another example: just today, I bought a handgun, a Glock 9×19. (Side note: it’s awesome as all fuck.) When you buy a gun from an individual or business with a Federal Firearms License (FFL), you have to fill out paperwork. One of the questions I had to answer today was “Are you an illegal user of marijuana?” I shit you not. Let’s say for the sake of argument that I am. Let’s say I smoke up 8 times a day. Does this make me more  likely to, say, shoot up my office, or the nearest grade school? I’d say “No, this is ridiculous what are you talking about? Seriously?” but I’ll leave that as a rhetorical question for the reader.

The modern Republican party caters unabashedly to the wealthy. Yet Jesus threw the moneychangers out of the temple, and warned us that it’s difficult for rich people to enter the kingdom of heaven. Still, Christians generally appear to fall in line behind their leaders, who fall in line behind … I don’t know. Shit, doesn’t anybody think for themselves anymore? From what I can see, the Bible nearly directly contradicts the modern GOP. By saying this, I’m not saying the Democrats are ideal, and I wish like hell we had some other option, but for the time being at least the Democratic party is the lesser of two evils. I’m this close to registering as a Democrat because of the lunacy of the GOP. “Creation science” isn’t science, it’s mythology. It’s no more science than are the Hopi people’s four creations, or the Norse tale of Odin and Ymir. Tax cuts cannot possibly be the answer for every economic problem. The best way to support the troops is to bring them home so they can be with their families.

This issue has very recently cost me old, long-established friendships. I’d love to show a brave face and claim I don’t give a shit, but I gotta be honest – this hurts me. How can politics possibly break up old friends that share a culture, a faith, and an upbringing? Seriously, what the fuck?
